A Survival Tip: Japanese Elderly People

Do you know the best way to communicate with Japanese elderly people?

They are really nice and helpful.  They are not even so shy about talking to foreigners.  The problem is how to make sense of what they say!  SERIOUSLY!!  They bombard you with a lot, literally a lot, "that" in their speech.

For example, "Could you take THAT?  Yes, that is THAT," while pointing out something.  Or, "Do you remember THAT?," which is out of the blue!!

You should NOT ask for clarification of "that," which drives them away.  Just smile, nodding to whatever they say!  A smile is a universal language, right?
