A Surprise Attack, Schools Closed: Dread of Corona Virus

Around 18:00 today (February 27th, 2020), Prime Minister Abe made an ABRUPT announcement: all elementary, junior and senior high schools in Japan (all over Japan) are to be requested closed for about 2 weeks, starting March 2nd.

This is for containing the spread of Coronavirus.  So far, this is the announcement of request the Japanese government made, and no details have been given yet.  Of course, follow-up reports are necessary to understand better.

It is surely a necessary decision to contain the Coronavirus.  However, since this time of the year (the end of school year) has a lot of important educational occasions, such as graduation ceremonies, entrance exams, and end-of-school events, this announcement will surely cause HUGE chaos on educational settings.  Schools probably do not know how to follow through this announcement, to be honest.

Parents have started crying for some measures to take days off from work.  Due to the closing of schools, day cares and after-school programs cannot be counted on.  Libraries and other public facilities, where children can go and study during the "break," are also expected to be closed for children.  Nowhere children can go than staying at home.

Also, it is reported that some hospitals are forced to downsize in providing medical services.  Some proportion of medical stuff cannot come and work at hospitals because they have school-aged children at home, whom they have to take care of.  What is going to happen to those who need medical care?  It is really scary.

A lot should be thought of thoroughly before putting this request into practice on school sides.  However, there is no way but to listen to the request.  A lot of people wonder what motivates Mr. Abe to make such a surprise attack.

We just hope that this drastic measure will take effect and stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Please check out this follow-up on education in Japan.
