Wagashi (part 1): Sweetened Edamame

When we say wagashi, or Japanese sweet, we can easily imagine one kind, which is red-bean stuffed sweet.  

Here are two pictures showing another kind, which has sweetened Edamame (English: soybeans) on rice cake.  Edamame is getting popular in foreign countries, but it is usually eaten with beer in Japan.  It is quite unique to use Edamame as an ingredient for wagashi even in Japan.  Sendai, a city in the northern part of Japan, is famous for this kind.  It is called "Zunda Mochi."

Even though you have eaten Edamame, you have never imagined or eaten this sweetened Edamame Wagashi, right?  This is not so sweet, but has just a tint with more flavor of Edamame actually.  When you are lucky, you can get this at Nagoya Station.
