If you are interested in young Japanese artists, especially avant-garde ones, you should check this out: The 16th Japan Media Art Festival.

This Festival features four divisions under the big umbrella of Media Arts, i.e., animation, manga, art, and entertainment.  Excellent art forms and performances are shown to the public for free.

This festival takes places from February 13th through 24th mainly in Yoyogi, Tokyo, but at some other locations in Tokyo as well.  Not only Japanese artists but also foreign artists show their arts!
